Just like the next person, I’m loving all things unicorn and 90’s inspo. But leading by example through my cruelty-free lifestyle, combined with the fact that I’m a broke Graduate can make things difficult to keep with the trends. That’s until I stumbled across the Multi-function Contour and Highlight brush  by Docolor (£5.99), whose technicolour handle immediately captivated my attention and met all of my needs. I must admit I am quite in love and wanted to share this, regardless of whether or not you’re vegan, on a budget, or an absolute beginner looking for a straight forward way of contouring: this is a must-have, cruelty-free favourite of the season that wins all round.

First Impressions and Expectations

Considering the price, I wasn’t expecting the packaging to be particularly special, especially as the product was ordered through Amazon. Though upon delivery, I really was quite surprised at how neat and stunning packaging was, with fancy rose gold lettering and a continuing theme of fantasy goodness. As a marketer, I can really appreciate how good packaging contributes to the overall feeling of quality towards the product, so this was no exception.

After careful opening, I was delighted when I was met with the same sparkling rainbow colours I was expecting. Thankfully, the glitter has been sealed by a clear coating which ensures there will be no shedding of particles throughout its usage, which is a nice (and needed) touch! I also noticed that the brush is quite big and chunky and unlike anything I’ve ever used before. But, as someone who isn’t particularly good with contour, I was certain the size of the brush would work in benefit with it’s claim to create strong, sculpted cheeks through “target application”. As such, I was expecting the product to act as a guiding “stamp” that works with my face shape in order to create the perfect contour shape, following my cheekbone direction.

Product Application

What can I say? The Brush worked like a dream.  I used the Sleek Contour Kit, which includes a highlighter and contour shade as my chosen product to apply. The only problem I encountered at this stage was, as the Sleek product is quite a compact palette, so it was difficult to pick up the product on such a large brush without mixing into the two! While it wasn’t impossible, maybe it’s something to keep in mind.

Sucking in my cheeks, I found the hollow underneath my cheekbone and used backwards and forwards sweeping motions to run the brush along. The brush fibres were soft against my sensitive skin and contributed to the added benefit of providing a lovely blend, ensuring a natural look. The largeness of the brush also helped make both sides of my contour match, which as ridiculous as it sounds, is something I struggle with!

Instead of using the same technique for highlight, I decided to use a dabbing motion, ensuring that I could pick up, and apply, as much highlight as I possibly could. However, this was mostly for the sake of being picked up on camera, and of course is just one way of many applying highlight product with this brush.

In terms of overall impression, I was superbly impressed with this brush. The product carried through on its claims of precise, target application whilst delivering on a natural blend. As somebody who struggles to maintain symmetry on both sides of my face, the scale of the brush against my cheekbones ensured this was something I didn’t have to think about – all the hard work was done for me, cutting down on my total time spent. I completely recommend this to anyone, especially beginners who are looking for an easy, non-fuss application.

You can buy the brush here for 5.99 from Amazon.
